Positive Behaviour Support

At Vision Beyond Autism, we provide individualised one-to-one Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) programmes for children, young people and adults with autism and other additional needs.

Programmes are designed around the individual — their strengths, goals, interests and support needs. Our approach also focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviours, reducing distress and creating supportive environments where individuals feel safe, understood and able to thrive.

Whether the aim is improving communication, increasing independence, accessing education, developing social understanding or reducing behaviours that impact quality of life, our team works closely with individuals and families to create support that is practical, compassionate and evidence based.

Our ultimate goal is to help individuals build confidence and participate fully in the activities or take opportunities that matter most to them.

What is ABA?

ABA is a science-based approach to understanding behaviour and applying learning principles to teach new skills or reduce harmful or barrier behaviours. It uses evidence-based strategies to teach new skills, build confidence and support positive behaviour change.

Research shows that ABA and Positive Behaviour Support can help individuals with autism and additional needs develop skills that increase independence, emotional wellbeing and access to meaningful opportunities.

PBS focuses on understanding the reasons behind behaviours and recognising that behaviours can often communicate unmet needs, anxiety, frustration or distress. By identifying triggers and barriers, we can create supportive environments that improve quality of life and reduce behaviours that may impact wellbeing.

Why do we use ABA?

At Vision beyond Autism, we find that ABA is an evidence-based approach proven to help individuals develop meaningful skills and achieve greater independence. Certified behaviour analysts design and oversee our programmes, ensuring ethical, effective and data-driven support tailored to each person’s needs.

ABA and PBS programmes can help individuals:

  • Develop communication and interaction skills
  • Increase confidence and build independence in everyday life
  • Improve emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Access education or work
  • Engage in hobbies and activities and other things in the community that they enjoy
  • Reduce behaviours that may impact wellbeing or safety

Our programmes focus on improving quality of life by helping individuals develop practical skills, build emotional wellbeing and participate more fully in their communities. We aim to increase choice, independence and meaningful participation in everyday life while reducing barriers that may prevent individuals accessing the things that matter to them.

Every programme is tailored to the individual, with goals that are functional, realistic and meaningful to them and the people around them.

Who can benefit from ABA and PBS services?

Our services support children, young people and adults with autism and additional needs who may:

  • Need support developing communication or independence skills
  • Experience behaviours linked to anxiety, frustration or distress
  • Require support accessing education or community settings
  • Need structured strategies and routines
  • Benefit from one-to-one specialist support
  • Need support with transitions or emotional regulation

Programmes can take place at home, in educational settings, in the community or in other appropriate environments depending on the needs of the individual.

Our approach

Our team of Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBA) oversee the development of individual programmes that focus on achieving meaningful and lasting progress. We take time to understand each individual’s current skills, motivators, routines and challenges before developing personalised goals and strategies. This helps us better understand the function of behaviours, identify environmental factors that may contribute to distress and develop proactive strategies that support positive outcomes.

An assessment and programme plan may include:

  • observation across settings
  • identifying strengths and barriers
  • collaborative goal setting
  • reviewing progress regularly

A team of trained staff then deliver these programmes using evidence-based approaches, adapting them based on the changing needs of the individual.

As well as supporting the individual, we can develop proactive strategies, routines and tools that families, schools and professionals can use consistently across settings to help reduce anxiety and create more predictable, supportive environments.

While every programme is unique, support may focus on:

  • Functional communication
  • Emotional regulation
  • Independence and daily living skills
  • Social understanding
  • Self-care skills
  • Learning readiness and engagement
  • Access to work placements
  • Engagement in community activities
  • Reducing behaviours that create barriers to learning or participation

Progress is regularly monitored and programmes are adapted over time to ensure support remains meaningful, effective and aligned with the individual’s goals.

How we deliver support

Our team can deliver sessions wherever support is required, whether that is in the home, school, community or elsewhere. Each package is flexible depending on need, can be built for short- or long-term goals.

Sessions are structured around positive reinforcement, skill development and achievable steps that help build confidence over time.

We use proactive, positive and the least restrictive approaches that focus on teaching new skills, reducing distress and supporting long-term wellbeing.

Support can include:

  • Teaching communication and life skills
  • Developing coping and self-regulation strategies
  • Creating structured routines and visual supports
  • Supporting transitions and change
  • Reducing behaviours linked to distress or frustration
  • Helping individuals access opportunities

Why work with VBA?

We understand that every individual is different, and that behaviours are often influenced by communication, environment, anxiety and unmet needs. Meaningful progress happens when support is consistent, respectful and tailored to the person. We work closely with families, schools and local authorities to deliver a collaborative approach.

Our services aim to:

  • Build long-term independence
  • Increase engagement in education and the community
  • Reduce anxiety and distress
  • Improve quality of life
  • Support stable placements and routines
  • Empower families with practical strategies and support

We welcome referrals from families, schools, local authorities and other professionals. To find out more about our ABA or PBS services, access resources or discuss next steps, contact Vision Beyond Autism.
